Danger of Methanol in Hand Sanitizer

    • 2 min read

    Recent FDA Announcement

Recent reports from the FDA warn against some sanitizer products which are believed to be contaminated with methanol impurities. These methanol contaminated products can lead to many issues such as skin allergies, blindness, hospitalizations, and even death. Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and must not be used due to its toxic effects.

    The Dangers of Methanol

Methanol is a highly toxic chemical that is very dangerous when ingested by the body. Methanol ingestion causes intoxication, which is a process where the absorbed methanol reacts with the enzymes present in the body and gets converted to other harmful species that can degrade the metabolism of a healthy body, thereby causing imbalances.  Therefore, the use of methanol must be avoided completely for the manufacture of the hand sanitizers.

If a substantial amount of methanol is accidentally ingested into the body it can result in:

    • Nausea

    • Vomiting

    • Headache

    • Blurred vision

    • Damage to the central nervous system

    • Death

Methanol poisoning requires antidotal therapy and critical care. If methanol poisoning occurs, please contact the poison center and seek immediate treatment. If you suspect that the hand sanitizer you used may have led to any of the above symptoms for you or your family stop using the product and immediately dispose of it in an appropriate hazardous waste container.

In order to avoid the harmful effects of methanol, ethanol is used in commonly available hand sanitizers. Ethanol, traditionally made from corn, has no toxic or harmful effects on the body and is effective in killing germs and viruses.

OHM products are methanol-free and use 70% or greater ethanol by volume in all sanitizer gels, liquids, and wipes. To make sure that our product meets all required specifications, we use an independent agency to certify our ethanol and we continuously monitor all the batches made by performing quality checks daily. All the quality checks are recorded and reported to monitor for alcohol content, density, and pH levels. From the cornfields that grow our ethanol to the final application of the label, OHM Products are 100% made in the USA.
